Life Transitions Therapy

Your life looks completely different now. And you’re searching for your footing in this new chapter. Specialized virtual psychotherapy with Jacqueline On, MSW, RSW, supporting adults across Ontario navigate grief and uncertainty to find clarity, grounding, and direction through major life shifts.

When Change Becomes Overwhelming

Major life transitions, whether chosen or completely unexpected, can shake you to the core. When the familiar structures, routines, or roles of your life suddenly change, your nervous system naturally interprets that unpredictability as a threat.

You might find yourself thinking:

I feel lost and directionless.

You feel stuck in the middle of a massive shift. The daily habits and familiar environment that used to anchor you are gone, leaving you feeling adrift.

I don’t know who I am anymore.

Now that everything has changed, you barely recognize yourself. You feel uncertain about who you are outside of the old job title, relationship status, or previous life role that had defined you for years.

Why haven’t I figured this out already?

You place heavy expectations on yourself to adapt quickly. It feels like you should have adjusted to a new life already, and you blame yourself for not having it all together yet.

Why can’t I just move on?

You carry a quiet grief for the past circumstances you left behind. Nostalgia pulls you backward, making it painful to accept or step into your current reality.

This is too much!

The ongoing stress of change has thrown off your body’s natural balance, affecting your sleep, appetite, and energy levels.

Did I make the right choice?

You second-guess yourself frequently, wondering if you’re doing the right thing. You are paralyzed by a crippling sense of self-doubt. You think frequently about “what if” scenarios and are scared of the future.

About Life Transitions Therapy

Major life adjustments, whether planned or unexpected, often require us to close a familiar chapter before we feel ready for the next one. It’s natural to feel untethered, to grieve the version of life you left behind, or to feel immense pressure to “have it all figured out” right away.

Life transitions therapy is a dedicated space to help you ground yourself when everything around you is shifting. Rather than rushing you to adapt or move on, this therapy honours the natural ambiguity of being between life’s seasons.

It provides a structured, non-judgmental container to unravel the knot of emotions that come with major adjustments: helping you process identity shifts, manage decision fatigue, and find clarity amidst the unknown.

No matter if you’re navigating career milestones, stepping into new personal roles, or rebuilding after a major loss, you don’t have to find your bearings alone. At Sunward Therapy, I offer a steady, collaborative partnership to help you move through life’s transitions with greater ease and self-compassion.

How We Work Together

In times of major change, our sessions offer a grounded, adaptable space to help you find your footing. I combine reflective, values-based tools with gentle somatic practices to help you catch your breath, process the emotional weight of change, and slowly redefine your path forward.

Together, we focus on four core areas to help you navigate this transition with clarity and confidence:

Regulate an Overwhelmed Nervous System

When predictability disappears, your body’s internal alarm system naturally goes on high alert. We will use gentle somatic tracking and gentle tapping to calm physical anxiety, soothe lingering grief or resistance, and anchor your system in the safety of the present moment

Process the “In-Between” Grief and Internal Conflict

Big transitions, even positive ones, often bring a quiet, complex sorrow. Our sessions are a dedicated space to mourn past chapters, lost routines, or former versions of yourself, giving you full permission to grieve what you are leaving behind. We will listen to the internal tug-of-war between the part of you that longs for the safety of the past and the part of you reaching toward the future.

Reclaim Your Identity and Values

When roles, routines, and environments shift, it’s easy to lose sight of who you are. We will explore what is important to you and who you are now, in the present. By separating your inherent worth from external roles, titles, or physical capabilities that may have changed, you can step into this new landscape with authenticity.

Reduce Pressure and Build Momentum

When the pressure to “have it all figured out” takes over, it can create a frantic sense of urgency. Together, we will practice loosening the grip of demanding thoughts, giving you room to breathe and take small, confident steps forward on your own timeline.

Our goal is to help you move through seasons of change with a grounded mind, a calm body, and choices that feel true to you.

Support for Your Evolving Life

There is no pressure to have your next chapter completely mapped out when you walk through my virtual door. Whether you arrive at a session feeling completely overwhelmed by a recent change, or you feel ready to purposefully look ahead, we will collaborate on a timeline that honours your energy, allowing you to naturally find your footing at your own pace.

Our sessions are held online via secure video, allowing you to join from your couch, your bed, or wherever you feel most comfortable. By eliminating travel time, sensory-heavy waiting rooms, and extra physical effort, you can save your energy for what truly matters. This is your virtual space to rest, process the change in your life, and redefine your new identity.

About Nagivating Life Transitions

Change is a natural part of life, but often brings with it many unknowns. Whether you are navigating a chosen shift or adapting to an unexpected twist of fate, major life transitions can shake your very foundation. It is incredibly common to feel overwhelmed, grieve the version of life you left behind, or feel immense pressure to “have it all figured out” right away. When the ground beneath you suddenly shifts, your nervous system is primed to interpret that change as a major threat, leaving you feeling stressed and anxious.

If you are currently in the messy middle of a major transition, you don’t have to find your bearings all alone. I provide compassionate, steady support to help you catch your breath, process the emotional weight of change, and slowly redefine your path forward.

How Therapy Can Help You Navigate Life Transitions

Therapy is a dedicated, non-judgmental container to unravel the complex knot of emotions that come with major life adjustments. Together, we will work to:

  • Regulate an Overwhelmed Nervous System: Ground your nervous system in the safety and stability of the present, calming the blaring physiological alarm when your predictability and sense of safety are disrupted.
  • Reorient to New Environments: Help you find your direction when your routine is interrupted, building practical skills to adapt to career changes, health adjustments, or heavy personal milestones.
  • Process the “In-Between” Grief: Give you permission to mourn the past chapter, old routines, or past versions of yourself, even if the transition you are making is a positive one.
  • Reclaim Your Identity: Explore who you are now in this new landscape, helping you separate your inherent worth from external roles, titles, or physical capabilities that may have changed.
  • Reduce the Pressure to Perform: Quiet the internal expectation that you need to instantly adapt, allowing you to move through the transition with self-compassion and at your own unique pace.

Common Symptoms Addressed

  • Pervasive feelings of being "stuck", untethered, or directionless.
  • Acute overwhelm brought on by sudden adjustments to your daily routine or living situation.
  • Deep nostalgia or grief for past circumstances, roles, and old routines.
  • Paralyzing self-doubt or a shifting, uncertain sense of personal identity.
  • Stress-induced disruptions to your sleep, appetite, or daily habits.
  • Difficulty making decisions or choosing a clear path forward during times of change.

My Approach

When life feels chaotic, therapy offers a stable place to land. I combine reflective, values-based tools with somatic practices to help you steady your mind and settle your body in times of change. This integrative approach supports you as you move between life’s seasons, whether you are adjusting to health and capability shifts, career and academic milestones, changing roles, or rebuilding after a major loss.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): We will work on anchoring you in the present moment, clarifying your core values so you can make intentional choices that align with who you want to be in this next chapter.
  • EFT Tapping and Somatic Tools: Big life transitions can stir up significant physical stress. We will use gentle acupressure tapping to soothe your nervous system, allowing you to process the anxiety, grief, or resistance that naturally arises when your normal is disrupted.
  • IFS-Informed Parts Work: We will listen to the internal conflict that change brings—honouring both the hesitant, protective part of you that wants to cling to the safety of the past, and the hopeful or determined part trying to push you forward into the unknown.
